The Rising Sun on a Day in August
By John Bird
The Assumption of Mary into Heaven, an event celebrated each year on August 15th, has a special significance for Japan and Japanese Catholics, for it was on that date in 1549 that She gave birth to the Church in the Orient when St. Francis Xavier, the intrepid Jesuit missionary stepped ashore on the southern island of Japan.
It was on the same date in 1945 that Japan formally surrendered to the allies so bringing an end to World War II.
