Ferns Cross - 222
Once the seat of the kings of Leinster, Ferns was burned and looted time and time again so there is very little left. What is left, however, is intriguing, especially, the ruins of the cathedral with its tower and 13th century roofless chancel, and the surviving round tower of the castle. Today’s castle, with its moat and 8 foot thick walls, now ruined, was begun in the early 1200’s. The fleur-de-lis, a stylized annunciation lily and therefore associated with the Virgin Mary.
