The Book of Kells, a large format manuscript codex of the Latin text of the Gospels, is generally thought to have originated at the Monastery of Iona, Scotland. About 807, after a series of devastating Viking raids, it was taken to the Monastery of Kells, Ireland. The delightful birds in this series are found scattered throughout the text; at the ends of lines or between lines. They provide color and sometimes, even humor. Peacocks and doves symbolize Christ and the incorruptibility of Christ, eagles represent the ascension of Christ.
